Hiraeth,
is a Welsh word that has no direct English translation. “a homesickness for a home you cannot return to, or that never was” or “homesickness tinged with grief or sadness over the lost or departed. It is a mix of longing, yearning, nostalgia, wistfulness”
“Exploring the world is one of the best ways of exploring the mind, and walking travels both terrains”
Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust: A History of Walking
The fall of my steps echoes the rhythm of my thinking,I discover patterns and implications that are not always present in the image. My thoughts while walking are seemingly unconnected always going back to experiences in my childhood in East Germany living beneath The Berlin Wall. I feel the need to refer to this regime which permeated every aspect of life. Love for your “homeland” was substituted for love for the state. I am still reluctant to use words such as homeland and I feel overwhelmed and deeply distraught with the idea about home even more now. Since Brexit my sense of security has been undermined in the country I have chosen to live in.
